Frequently Asked Questions
What is the cheapest eSIM for India?
The cheapest India eSIM on MobiMatter costs $3.49 for 1 GB, valid for 14 days. Prices come live from 6 vetted providers and change often; the price on this page is the current one.
Is it worth getting an eSIM for India?
For most tourists and business travellers, yes, if your phone supports eSIM. India plans start at $3.49 for 1 GB, and you install the eSIM before you fly, so you have data when you land, without queuing for a tourist SIM at the airport. If your home plan already covers India at no extra cost, you may not need one.
Which networks do India eSIMs use?
India eSIMs on MobiMatter run on Airtel, Jio, and Vi. Every plan names its network, so you can choose the carrier you prefer before you buy.
Which eSIM is best for India?
Our best plan for India right now is 30 GB for 30 days at $26.99 from TSimTech. We rank plans on quality and value for money, and this one comes first in the list.
How much data do I need for a week in India?
It depends on how you use your phone. Light use (maps, messaging, browsing) takes about 0.5–1 GB a day; scrolling a lot of social video can take 2–3 GB or more. Typical use per hour:
- Instagram Reels, TikTok: 0.3–1 GB
- YouTube, Netflix at standard quality: 0.5–1 GB
- Video calls (WhatsApp, FaceTime): 0.5–1 GB
- Voice calls (WhatsApp, FaceTime Audio): 50–70 MB
- Maps and navigation: 2–6 MB
- Messaging and browsing: 50–150 MB
The cheapest India plan with at least 5 GB for a week or longer is 5 GB for 15 days at $7.49.
Do India eSIMs support 5G and hotspot?
5G is available on 15 plans for India, where the local network has 5G coverage; the others use 4G/LTE. Hotspot (tethering) works on every plan, so you can share your data with other devices.
Does a India eSIM come with a phone number?
Most travel eSIMs, including most India plans, are data-only and have no local number. You keep your usual number on your main SIM for calls, texts and WhatsApp. Plans that include a number or minutes say so on the plan page.
Will my phone work with a India eSIM?
Yes, if it supports eSIM and is not locked to a carrier. To check, dial *#06#: if an EID number appears, your phone supports eSIM. Most iPhones from the XS/XR on, Galaxy S20 and later and Pixel 3 and later do, except models sold in mainland China.
Can I keep my own SIM and WhatsApp while using a India eSIM?
Yes. Your eSIM and your main SIM can be active at the same time. Use the eSIM for mobile data with data roaming on for that line, and turn data roaming off on your home SIM to avoid charges. WhatsApp keeps working on your usual number.

It is easy to use and for a 1-2 week vacation it is one of the best choices in terms of price/value, e.g. also for Egyptian eSIM. Now 30 days/5GB 6.5 €, this is cheaper than any other app at the moment

MobiMatters came highly recommended in family-oriented travel groups on social networks, when I was researching on travel eSIMs for Iceland. The first package I started with was a US + Europe - it was easy to activate before leaving home (and verifying), and then continue on landing in Reykjavik. Unthinkable speeds (given we are used to Verizon and TMobile in the US) - over 400 Mbps on the Fast app! Unlimited tethering options allowed me to use across my MacBook and phone, as well as share across the family with the kids on iPads and phones. Navigation on Google and Waze was aa breeze with the constant high speed data connectivity. Our plans did not support phones (we knew this) but with WhatsApp and FaceTime allowing audio and video calls we never felt the need for basic phone service. Customer service on email was responsive and helpful when I wanted to understand how top-ups work. Highly recommend MobiMatters - I’m on my third top-up as we speak!
