1. Which eSIM is best for Spain?

For most trips the best eSIM for Spain is 10 GB for 30 days at ⁦$10.49⁩, on a plan that lists at least two Spanish networks. In central Madrid any network will do. A fallback network earns its place in the Pyrenees and the emptier parts of Extremadura, where you may only see one operator's mast.

Unlimited data for Spain comes on Europe-wide plans, and the cheapest is unlimited data for 3 days at ⁦$7.99⁩. For a longer stay, size a fixed plan to your trip and top up if you run short. The "Spain and Portugal" plans cover only those two countries. The Europe plans add most of the EU, the UK and Switzerland at a similar price per gigabyte, which makes them the better buy if Spain is one stop of several.

2. Can I get an eSIM for Spain with a Spanish phone number?

No travel eSIM we sell for Spain includes a +34 number. As of October 2026, our Spain plans are data-only, and the two EU plans that include calls (60 GB and 120 GB) come with a French +33 number from Bouygues. WhatsApp, iMessage and FaceTime run over data, so friends reach you as usual, and leaving the physical SIM in place means one-time codes from your bank still arrive.

A Spanish number means a prepaid SIM from a Movistar, Orange, Vodafone or Yoigo shop, and the shop will ask for your passport. Under Spain's Ley 25/2007, operators must record the buyer's name, nationality and ID number before a prepaid SIM is activated (as of October 2026).

3. Do I still need an eSIM for Spain with EU roaming?

Usually not: a SIM from any EU or EEA country, plus Moldova and Ukraine since January 2026, roams in Spain at home prices under the EU's roam like at home rules, which now run until 2032. Dutch and German visitors on a 5 GB home plan get those same 5 GB in Seville.

Two cases still call for an eSIM. Your operator can apply a fair-use cap if your home plan is unlimited or very cheap, so check the roaming allowance in your app before you rely on it. The other is a trip that crosses into Andorra or Gibraltar, which the rules do not cover.

4. How do I get an eSIM for Spain on my iPhone?

Buy the plan on MobiMatter, then scan the QR code or tap "Install" in our app while you are still on home Wi-Fi; any iPhone from the XS and XR onward supports eSIM if it is not locked to your carrier. Most of our Spain plans start their clock on first data use in Spain, so installing three days early costs you nothing.

Check the plan page before you install, though. As of October 2026, a few Europe plans from 3 start counting the day you install them, which is a reason to wait until the evening before your flight.

5. Which networks do Spain eSIMs use on the mainland and the islands?

Our Spain plans connect to Orange, Movistar, Vodafone, and Yoigo, and the table shows how many plans use each. Every plan lists its networks before you buy, and a plan with three of them will move to whichever is strongest when one drops out.

The Canary Islands and the Balearics are ordinary Spanish territory for your phone: Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Mallorca and Ibiza are on the same networks as Madrid. The Canaries are inside the EU under Article 355 of the EU Treaty, so EU roaming applies there too, even though the islands sit outside the EU VAT area (VAT Directive, Article 6), which matters for shopping and parcels.

6. Do Renfe and AVE trains in Spain have signal?

Yes, and every AVE, Avlo and AVE France service also carries free PlayRenfe Wi-Fi, as do most Larga Distancia trains, according to Renfe. You log in with your ticket number. When Renfe and Telefónica launched the service in 2016, it combined satellite with 4G and covered 1,600 km of high-speed line, including 75 tunnels (La Moncloa).

Treat the train Wi-Fi as a backup. A full AVE on the Madrid to Barcelona run shares one connection, so keep your eSIM on for video calls and anything work-related.

7. How much data do I need for a 3-day visit to Spain?

Three days of maps, messaging and photo uploads in Barcelona or Madrid fits inside 3 GB, and plans of that size start from ⁦$4.49⁩. Daily video calls home, or using your phone as a hotspot for a laptop, push that toward 5 GB.

8. Can one eSIM cover Spain, Portugal, Andorra and Gibraltar?

Portugal is easy: every Spain plan with "Europe" or "Spain and Portugal" in its name also works in Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve. Andorra and Gibraltar are different. As of October 2026, Andorra is on our Sparks Andorra plans (Andorra, Spain and France) and the Bouygues EU plans, while Gibraltar is only on our global plans.

9. Should I turn off roaming on my home SIM in Spain?

Turn off data roaming for your home SIM if it is from outside the EU, and set the eSIM as your mobile data line; the home SIM can stay on for calls and texts. Most travel eSIMs connect to Spanish networks as roaming, so leave data roaming switched on for the eSIM line itself.

On an iPhone, this lives under Settings, Mobile Data (Cellular in the US). Choose the eSIM for Mobile Data and leave "Allow Mobile Data Switching" off, or the phone can fall back to your home SIM in a weak spot.

10. What is the best eSIM for a Spain road trip?

A road trip needs more data than a city break, because navigation and music streaming run for hours: 20 GB for 30 days at ⁦$17.99⁩ gives you room for a two-week loop through Andalusia without counting megabytes. Pick a plan that lists three networks. On the back roads of Teruel or the Alpujarras, being able to switch operator is worth more than a few extra gigabytes.

11. Is a Spain eSIM cheaper than roaming from the US, UK or Canada?

For a week or more, usually yes: a Spain plan with 10 GB for 30 days costs from ⁦$10.49⁩, and the price is fixed however many days you use it. US and Canadian carriers mostly charge a daily travel pass, so multiply that by your trip length. UK SIMs lost EU roaming rights after Brexit and Swiss SIMs never had them, so check your operator's daily Spain rate first.

On a weekend trip your own carrier can still come out cheaper. If it includes Spain in your plan at no extra cost, keep using it and buy an eSIM only if the allowance runs out.
