Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need an eSIM for Japan, or is pocket WiFi better?
You need neither, but most visitors want mobile data for maps and trains. An eSIM is the simplest: nothing to collect, carry, charge or return, and it works on your own phone from landing. Pocket WiFi suits groups sharing one connection, but everyone has to stay near the device. Free Wi-Fi is common in cities but patchy elsewhere.

How much data do I need for a trip to Japan?
For maps, messaging and browsing, a common rule of thumb is 0.5 to 1 GB a day, so 10 GB covers about a week and 20 GB about two weeks. Video uses far more: Netflix lists up to 3 GB per hour in HD. If you stream or share your connection, choose a larger or unlimited plan.

Should I buy my Japan eSIM before I fly or at the airport?
Buy it online before you fly, so you can install it at home over Wi-Fi and have data the moment you land. Japan's main airports have free Wi-Fi and counters selling SIM cards and renting pocket WiFi, but an eSIM installed in advance saves queueing on arrival.

What is the cheapest eSIM for Japan?
The cheapest Japan eSIM on MobiMatter costs $3.99 for 1 GB, valid for 14 days. Prices come live from 7 vetted providers and change often; the price on this page is the current one.
Is it worth getting an eSIM for Japan?
For most tourists and business travellers, yes, if your phone supports eSIM. Japan plans start at $3.99 for 1 GB, and you install the eSIM before you fly, so you have data when you land, without queuing for a tourist SIM at the airport. If your home plan already covers Japan at no extra cost, you may not need one.
Which networks do Japan eSIMs use?
Japan eSIMs on MobiMatter run on SoftBank, au (KDDI), NTT docomo, and Rakuten. Every plan names its network, so you can choose the carrier you prefer before you buy.
Which eSIM is best for Japan?
Our best plan for Japan right now is 50 GB for 30 days at $29.99 from IIJ. We rank plans on quality and value for money, and this one comes first in the list.
Is there an unlimited data eSIM for Japan?
Yes. Unlimited data plans for Japan start at $10.99. Many unlimited plans slow down after a daily high-speed allowance, so check the fair-use terms on the plan page before you buy.
Do Japan eSIMs support 5G and hotspot?
5G is available on 38 plans for Japan, where the local network has 5G coverage; the others use 4G/LTE. Hotspot (tethering) works on every plan, so you can share your data with other devices.
Does a Japan eSIM come with a phone number?
Most travel eSIMs, including most Japan plans, are data-only and have no local number. You keep your usual number on your main SIM for calls, texts and WhatsApp. Plans that include a number or minutes say so on the plan page.

What our customers say

For our trip to China, South Korea, and Japan, my wife and I bought two 12GB data packages and used them without any problems. Their prices are much more reasonable compared to competitors; I definitely recommend them.

I loved it! I can have data wherever I go, they have many options, the data lasts a long time and is very affordable. I used the 3GB option for Europe and I've already had data for 15 days for €5. Honestly, if you manage it well and use it only when you don't have Wi-Fi, it can easily last you thirty days. I still have 1.6 GB left (half) and I have 10 days left on the plan. Highly recommended app for eSIM 💪

"This is the second time I've purchased an e-sim through this app. I was very satisfied the first time, so I continued using it. This time, I encountered a problem on my end and had trouble connecting. I submitted a support request by uploading my screenshots through the app. I received an email within seconds. We were able to resolve my issue very quickly. I sent screenshots via email one after another, and each time I received prompt responses within a few minutes. I was very pleased with the support lines. I recommend it!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️"

I tested the speed. It connected even faster than the internet I use at home in Turkey. There's no need to unnecessarily enrich service providers. You can use it abroad with peace of mind.
