Frequently Asked Questions
Is an eSIM or a tourist SIM better for Thailand?
Both work. Airport tourist SIMs from AIS, TrueMove H and dtac must be registered in person with your passport, which can mean a queue on arrival. An eSIM can be installed before you fly, keeps your own SIM in the phone for calls and bank codes, and works the moment you land.

Do I need to register my passport for a Thailand eSIM?
For local Thai SIMs and eSIMs, yes: Thai rules require passport registration with a face scan. Travel eSIMs that roam on Thai networks don't go through Thai registration. If a plan is a local Thai line, its plan page explains what you need to do.

What is the cheapest eSIM for Thailand?
The cheapest plan that works in Thailand is a multi-country one: $3.49 for 3 GB, valid for 7 days. The cheapest plan for Thailand alone is 5 GB for 30 days at $5.49. Prices come live from 7 vetted providers and change often.
Is it worth getting an eSIM for Thailand?
For most travellers, yes, if your phone supports eSIM. Thailand plans start at $3.49 for 3 GB, and the longest lasts 365 days, which suits long stays and repeat visits. If your home plan already covers Thailand at no extra cost, you may not need one.
Which networks do Thailand eSIMs use?
Thailand eSIMs on MobiMatter run on AIS, TrueMove H, and dtac; 5G plans are available on AIS, TrueMove H, and dtac. AIS carries the most plans. Each plan names its network, so you choose your carrier before you buy.
Which eSIM is best for Thailand?
For Thailand alone, our top plan right now is 50 GB for 10 days at $9.99 from True. If Thailand is one stop of several, the top multi-country plan is 30 GB for 30 days at $14.99 from Three Hong Kong, covering 3 countries.
How much data do I need for a week in Thailand?
It depends on how you use your phone. Light use (maps, messaging, browsing) takes about 0.5–1 GB a day; scrolling a lot of social video can take 2–3 GB or more. Typical use per hour:
- Instagram Reels, TikTok: 0.3–1 GB
- YouTube, Netflix at standard quality: 0.5–1 GB
- Video calls (WhatsApp, FaceTime): 0.5–1 GB
- Voice calls (WhatsApp, FaceTime Audio): 50–70 MB
- Maps and navigation: 2–6 MB
- Messaging and browsing: 50–150 MB
The cheapest Thailand plan with at least 5 GB for a week or longer is 5 GB for 15 days at $4.99.
Do Thailand eSIMs support 5G and hotspot?
5G is available on 31 plans for Thailand, where the local network has 5G coverage; the others use 4G/LTE. Hotspot (tethering) works on every plan, so you can share your data with other devices.
Does a Thailand eSIM come with a phone number?
Most travel eSIMs, including most Thailand plans, are data-only and have no local number. You keep your usual number on your main SIM for calls, texts and WhatsApp. Plans that include a number or minutes say so on the plan page.
Will my phone work with a Thailand eSIM?
Yes, if it supports eSIM and is not locked to a carrier. To check, dial *#06#: if an EID number appears, your phone supports eSIM. Most iPhones from the XS/XR on, Galaxy S20 and later and Pixel 3 and later do, except most models sold in mainland China and some sold in Hong Kong and Macao.

The Ultimate Southeast Asia Hopper Guide: Travel Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore & Bali on One eSIM
Southeast Asia welcomed more than 198 million international visitors in 2025, a figure that surpassed pre-pandemic travel levels by 12 percent, according to recent backpacker travel data. A large share of that traffic is not single-destination tourism. It is the modern version of the Banana Pancake Trail, where travelers land in Singapore, island-hop through Bali, land in Bangkok, and finish along Vietnam's coast in Da Nang, all inside one trip. The route has existed for decades, but the way tra...
