Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use my US phone in Italy?
Yes, if roaming is on for your line, but US carriers usually charge by the day. An unlocked phone that supports eSIM can instead use an Italian data plan on TIM, Vodafone, WindTre or Iliad, while your US number stays on for calls and texts. Check your own plan's terms: older or legacy plans may differ.

How do I get an eSIM for Italy?
The simplest way is to buy a travel eSIM online and install it at home, so it connects to TIM, Vodafone, WindTre or Iliad as soon as you land at Fiumicino, Venice Marco Polo or Naples. If you would rather have an Italian line, Iliad, TIM, Vodafone and WindTre all offer prepaid eSIM plans for international travellers.

No plan covers Italy alone right now, so the choice is a multi-country plan. The top one is 50 GB for 30 days at $36.49 from Sparks, covering 2 countries. We rank plans on quality and value for money. If price per GB is all that matters, the lowest right now is $0.62 per GB, with 50 GB for 30 days.

It depends on how you use your phone. Light use (maps, messaging, browsing) takes about 0.5–1 GB a day; scrolling a lot of social video can take 2–3 GB or more. Typical use per hour:
- Instagram Reels, TikTok: 0.3–1 GB

- Video calls (WhatsApp, FaceTime): 0.5–1 GB
- Voice calls (WhatsApp, FaceTime Audio): 50–70 MB
- Maps and navigation: 2–6 MB
- Messaging and browsing: 50–150 MB
The cheapest Italy plan with at least 5 GB for a week or longer is 5 GB for 30 days at $6.49.
Is there an unlimited data eSIM for Italy?
Yes. Unlimited data plans for Italy start at $7.99. Many unlimited plans slow down after a daily high-speed allowance, so check the fair-use terms on the plan page before you buy.
Do Italy eSIMs support 5G and hotspot?
5G is available on 34 plans for Italy, where the local network has 5G coverage; the others use 4G/LTE. Hotspot (tethering) works on every plan, so you can share your data with other devices.

Mentions ItalyI used it in Italy in 2024 and in Spain in 2026, and I was very satisfied. The app has improved day by day, and I never experienced any issues. I don't know about other apps, but I highly recommend MobiMatter. I bought 15GB of internet in Spain, and even though I didn't use that much, I still have 10GB left.

I needed an eSIM for EU and non-EU counties for the same trip. They had one package at a great price that worked great in all location. The app was great as I was able to check my data balance, in real time, quickly and easily during my trip. Would definitely use MobiMatters again. Downloading the eSIM was quick and easy too. In addition, when I reached out to Customer Support on a minor account issue, they were very responsive and addressed my issue quickly and effectively.
