Frequently Asked Questions
What is the cheapest eSIM for Austria?
Austria is covered by multi-country plans only, and the cheapest is $3.49 for 2 GB, valid for 15 days. Prices come live from 7 vetted providers and change often; the price on this page is the current one.
Is it worth getting an eSIM for Austria?
For most travellers, yes, if your phone supports eSIM. Austria plans start at $3.49 for 2 GB, and the longest lasts 365 days, which suits long stays and repeat visits. If your home plan already covers Austria at no extra cost, you may not need one.
Which networks do Austria eSIMs use?
Austria eSIMs on MobiMatter run on A1, Magenta, and 3; 5G plans are available on A1, Magenta, and 3. A1 carries the most plans. Each plan names its network, so you choose your carrier before you buy.
Which eSIM is best for Austria?
No plan covers Austria alone right now, so the choice is a multi-country plan. The top one is 50 GB for 30 days at $36.49 from Sparks, covering 2 countries. We rank plans on quality and value for money.
How much data do I need for a week in Austria?
It depends on how you use your phone. Light use (maps, messaging, browsing) takes about 0.5–1 GB a day; scrolling a lot of social video can take 2–3 GB or more. Typical use per hour:
- Instagram Reels, TikTok: 0.3–1 GB
- YouTube, Netflix at standard quality: 0.5–1 GB
- Video calls (WhatsApp, FaceTime): 0.5–1 GB
- Voice calls (WhatsApp, FaceTime Audio): 50–70 MB
- Maps and navigation: 2–6 MB
- Messaging and browsing: 50–150 MB
The cheapest Austria plan with at least 5 GB for a week or longer is 5 GB for 30 days at $6.49.
Is there an unlimited data eSIM for Austria?
Yes. Unlimited data plans for Austria start at $7.99. Many unlimited plans slow down after a daily high-speed allowance, so check the fair-use terms on the plan page before you buy.
Do Austria eSIMs support 5G and hotspot?
5G is available on 30 plans for Austria, where the local network has 5G coverage; the others use 4G/LTE. Hotspot (tethering) works on every plan, so you can share your data with other devices.
Does a Austria eSIM come with a phone number?
Most travel eSIMs, including most Austria plans, are data-only and have no local number. You keep your usual number on your main SIM for calls, texts and WhatsApp. Plans that include a number or minutes say so on the plan page.
Will my phone work with a Austria eSIM?
Yes, if it supports eSIM and is not locked to a carrier. To check, dial *#06#: if an EID number appears, your phone supports eSIM. Most iPhones from the XS/XR on, Galaxy S20 and later and Pixel 3 and later do, except most models sold in mainland China and some sold in Hong Kong and Macao.
Can I keep my own SIM and WhatsApp while using a Austria eSIM?
Yes. Your eSIM and your main SIM can be active at the same time. Use the eSIM for mobile data with data roaming on for that line, and turn data roaming off on your home SIM to avoid charges. WhatsApp keeps working on your usual number.

very convenient app to buy an eSim for travelling, you can choose the countries you need and have it in one pack, you can filter the options by the GB space and sort it by price, so it takes less time then just manually comparing different eSim apps. Local 5G internet works well

Purchased eSIM in Australia and set it up in Azerbaijan. Having never used an eSIM before, I had a few ‘user issues’. These were sorted out very quickly via email and me sending a screen shot of my ‘attempted’ setup. Technician got back to me in very short order with some simple instructions and now all good. Great efficient service.

This was my first e-SIM experience, and believe me, the signal is much better than the lines in Turkey. I traveled to four different cities in Indonesia and got 5G in all of them. 5 GB of internet lasted me three weeks. Thank you.

During my 5-day trip to Greece, my wife and I shared the "Europa special 10 GB" package. We used it extensively and without interruption in all 5 days, but only managed to use 5 GB. If I ever travel abroad again, I will definitely choose Mobimatter.
