Frequently Asked Questions
What is the cheapest eSIM for Italy?
The cheapest Italy eSIM on MobiMatter costs $3.49 for 2 GB, valid for 15 days. Prices come live from 7 vetted providers and change often; the price on this page is the current one.
Is it worth getting an eSIM for Italy?
For most tourists and business travellers, yes, if your phone supports eSIM. Italy plans start at $3.49 for 2 GB, and you install the eSIM before you fly, so you have data when you land, without queuing for a tourist SIM at the airport. If your home plan already covers Italy at no extra cost, you may not need one.
Which networks do Italy eSIMs use?
Italy eSIMs on MobiMatter run on Iliad, Vodafone, WINDTRE, TIM, and Wind Tre. Every plan names its network, so you can choose the carrier you prefer before you buy.
Which eSIM is best for Italy?
Our best plan for Italy right now is 120 GB for 30 days at $49.99 from Bouygues. We rank plans on quality and value for money, and this one comes first in the list. If price per GB is all that matters, the lowest right now is $0.60 per GB, with 50 GB for 60 days.
How much data do I need for a week in Italy?
It depends on how you use your phone. Light use (maps, messaging, browsing) takes about 0.5–1 GB a day; scrolling a lot of social video can take 2–3 GB or more. Typical use per hour:
- Instagram Reels, TikTok: 0.3–1 GB
- YouTube, Netflix at standard quality: 0.5–1 GB
- Video calls (WhatsApp, FaceTime): 0.5–1 GB
- Voice calls (WhatsApp, FaceTime Audio): 50–70 MB
- Maps and navigation: 2–6 MB
- Messaging and browsing: 50–150 MB
The cheapest Italy plan with at least 5 GB for a week or longer is 5 GB for 30 days at $6.49.
Is there an unlimited data eSIM for Italy?
Yes. Unlimited data plans for Italy start at $7.99. Many unlimited plans slow down after a daily high-speed allowance, so check the fair-use terms on the plan page before you buy.
Do Italy eSIMs support 5G and hotspot?
5G is available on 36 plans for Italy, where the local network has 5G coverage; the others use 4G/LTE. Hotspot (tethering) works on every plan, so you can share your data with other devices.
Does a Italy eSIM come with a phone number?
Most travel eSIMs, including most Italy plans, are data-only and have no local number. You keep your usual number on your main SIM for calls, texts and WhatsApp. Plans that include a number or minutes say so on the plan page.
Will my phone work with a Italy eSIM?
Yes, if it supports eSIM and is not locked to a carrier. To check, dial *#06#: if an EID number appears, your phone supports eSIM. Most iPhones from the XS/XR on, Galaxy S20 and later and Pixel 3 and later do, except models sold in mainland China.
Can I keep my own SIM and WhatsApp while using a Italy eSIM?
Yes. Your eSIM and your main SIM can be active at the same time. Use the eSIM for mobile data with data roaming on for that line, and turn data roaming off on your home SIM to avoid charges. WhatsApp keeps working on your usual number.

What our customers say
5.0
I used it in Italy in 2024 and in Spain in 2026, and I was very satisfied. The app has improved day by day, and I never experienced any issues. I don't know about other apps, but I highly recommend MobiMatter. I bought 15GB of internet in Spain, and even though I didn't use that much, I still have 10GB left.

very convenient app to buy an eSim for travelling, you can choose the countries you need and have it in one pack, you can filter the options by the GB space and sort it by price, so it takes less time then just manually comparing different eSim apps. Local 5G internet works well

An excellent app with very reasonable prices compared to the exorbitant prices in Türkiye. The internet speed is excellent, and it provides 5G coverage, provided the phone supports eSIM functionality.

I bought the eSIM for a holiday in Tibet. Everything was great; with the integrated VPN I was able to access all the sites that are normally blocked in China (Google, WhatsApp, etc.).
