Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Google, WhatsApp and Instagram in China with an eSIM?
It depends on how the plan routes your data. Google, WhatsApp, Instagram and many other services are blocked on mainland China's internet. Many travel eSIMs route data through a network outside the mainland, such as Hong Kong, so these apps usually work without a VPN; plans that use a local Chinese connection don't. Check the plan details before you buy, as rules and routing can change.

Why don't phones sold in mainland China support eSIM?
Chinese carriers didn't offer eSIM for phones until late 2025, so most iPhones sold in mainland China have two physical SIM slots and no eSIM. China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom began eSIM trials in October 2025, and a few recent models sold there now support it. A travel eSIM works in China on any unlocked eSIM phone bought elsewhere.

Does a China eSIM work in Hong Kong and Macau?
Only if the plan lists them. Hong Kong and Macau have their own mobile networks, separate from mainland China. Many China plans include both and some China-only plans don't; the country list on the plan page shows which.

What is the cheapest eSIM for China?
The cheapest China eSIM on MobiMatter is a plan for China alone: $3.99 for 2 GB, valid for 15 days. Prices come live from 7 vetted providers and change often; the price on this page is the current one.
Is it worth getting an eSIM for China?
For most travellers, yes, if your phone supports eSIM. China plans start at $3.99 for 2 GB, and the longest lasts 365 days, which suits long stays and repeat visits. If your home plan already covers China at no extra cost, you may not need one.
Which networks do China eSIMs use?
China eSIMs on MobiMatter run on China Unicom, China Telecom, and China Mobile; 5G plans are available on China Unicom, China Telecom, and China Mobile. China Unicom carries the most plans. Each plan names its network, so you choose your carrier before you buy.
Which eSIM is best for China?
For China alone, our top plan right now is 30 GB for 30 days at $19.99 from TSimTech. If China is one stop of several, the top multi-country plan is 35 GB for 30 days at $27.99 from TSimTech, covering 3 countries. If price per GB is all that matters, the lowest right now is $0.60 per GB, with 50 GB for 30 days.
How much data do I need for a week in China?
It depends on how you use your phone. Light use (maps, messaging, browsing) takes about 0.5–1 GB a day; scrolling a lot of social video can take 2–3 GB or more. Typical use per hour:
- Instagram Reels, TikTok: 0.3–1 GB
- YouTube, Netflix at standard quality: 0.5–1 GB
- Video calls (WhatsApp, FaceTime): 0.5–1 GB
- Voice calls (WhatsApp, FaceTime Audio): 50–70 MB
- Maps and navigation: 2–6 MB
- Messaging and browsing: 50–150 MB
The cheapest China plan with at least 5 GB for a week or longer is 5 GB for 15 days at $5.99.
Is there an unlimited data eSIM for China?
Yes. Unlimited data plans for China start at $9.99. Many unlimited plans slow down after a daily high-speed allowance, so check the fair-use terms on the plan page before you buy.
Do China eSIMs support 5G and hotspot?
5G is available on 43 plans for China, where the local network has 5G coverage; the others use 4G/LTE. Hotspot (tethering) works on every plan, so you can share your data with other devices.

Used this app for mobile data while in Malaysia for a few days last week. I rate it 10/10 for ease of use, affordability and for effectiveness too. After 5 days of regular usage, I still have 8GB left out of 10GB

I’ve been travelling around SE Asia for the last 7 months, covering 6 different countries, and this app has been amazing throughout when needing to change eSIM. Very easy set-up when buying one and if you in fact are having some troubles, contacting the support team and talking through email takes no time at all. I was having some difficulty with an eSIM in Vietnam since my phone was not finding a signal no matter what I did - their support team helped me and guided me on different ways to fix it. Thank you!!

China Golden Week 2026: 15 Outbound Hotspots for October's Massive Travel Rush
What is Golden Week 2026 and Why the Travel Surge is so Big Golden Week 2026 runs from October 1 through October 7, a seven-day national holiday built around China's National Day. Because 2026's Mid-Autumn Festival falls a full week earlier, on September 25 to 27, the two holidays stay separate this year rather than merging into one extended break, so the October holiday keeps its standard seven-day shape. That seven-day window is still enough to trigger one of the largest travel movements on t...
